KABUL - The United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) is deeply concerned about recent events in Taluqan city, Takhar province that resulted in deaths and injuries to civilians. English

Following a night raid in Ahandara village, Taluqan city on 17 May in which four persons were killed, including two women, violent demonstrations followed in Taluqan city that caused the deaths of at least 14 people and injured dozens of others.

UNAMA has been informed that local authorities and the International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) have begun investigations into these incidents. UNAMA urges government authorities and ISAF to thoroughly investigate these incidents and to promptly report on their findings.

The United Nations on behalf of all Afghans calls on all parties to the conflict to take all necessary measures to protect civilians.

Tensions remain high in Taluqan today. UNAMA urges all parties to remain calm and to exercise restraint.
