Peace Week to be observed, 20-25 September

KANDAHAR - The provincial peace committee has decided to commemorate peace week, from 20 to 25 September, in Kandahar by organizing several events, said Haji Atha Mohammad Khan, the head of the Kandahar peace committee, at a meeting yesterday.

Mr. Khan said the decision was in line with the central-level decision by the High Peace Council to commemorate organize peace events coinciding with the International Peace Day that falls on 21 September.

The United Nations General Assembly endorsed in 2001 a resolution establishing an annual day of global ceasefire and non-violence on 21 September, marked each year across the globe.

According to the Peace Committee Secretariat, a range of activities will be organized during the peace campaign including naming of a Kandahar district as a “peace district” and inaugurating a peace project, among others.

School teachers will also allocate 10-20 minutes of their time to lecture their students about the importance of having peace. Moreover, there will be “extensive Media campaign”, broadcasting messages of peace. Poem recitation programmes will also be organized.

“The peace committee are also in contact with some insurgent’s groups and want to reconcile them during the peace week. The size of the group is not important and even if a small group of insurgents join the peace process during the week, it will have symbolic importance,” said Mr. Khan.

Meanwhile, the Southern Regional Office of UNAMA is organizing a Folk Music Concert in Kandahar to mark the Peace Day.
