PAKTYA: Work on construction of Ghazni airport starts

GHAZNI - Work has been started on construction of an airport in south-eastern Afghan province of Ghazni. The construction of the region’s first airport is scheduled to be completed in a year.

Speaking at a ceremony organized to mark the start of the construction, the provincial Deputy Governor of Ghazni, Mohammad Ali Ahmadi, said that the air travel facility would be provided to thousands of people from Ghazni and neighbouring provinces after the construction of the airport.

He said the airport’s boundary wall was already 80 per cent completed and the remaining would be constructed in the next few months. The wall and two runways would be built at the cost of US$3.5 million, he added.

Work on the terminal would be launched later, the Deputy Governor said, calling it a big project for 2013. The scheme was slightly delayed due to lack of attention.

The Provincial Head of the Afghanistan Chamber of Commerce and Industries (ACCI), Abdul Mateen Qalandari hoped that the construction of the airport would boost the economy of the people in the province.

He mentioned that the construction work on the airport was scheduled to be completed two years ago but the officials concerned failed to meet their promises.
