NANGAHAR – The UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR) has started distribution of winter assistance to returnee families in four provinces in Afghanistan’s east: Nangarhar, Kunar, Laghman and Nuristan.

A total of 4,000 “eligible” returnee families who returned to the country in 2010, 2011 and 2012 will receive some food as well as non-food items such as tarpaulins, gas cylinders and blankets, among others.

Masood Azizi, the director of the Office of the Governor of Nangarhar Province, said the Provincial Government had provided the returnees with plots of land in returnee townships.

Besides providing the returnees with winter assistance, the UNHCR also helps them with construction of shelters, poultry farming, vocational training in returnee concentrated areas.
