NANGARHAR: Afghan legislators discuss University problems with officials

JALALABAD - Officials of the Nangarhar University held a joint meeting with members of Lower and Upper Houses of the Afghan parliament to discuss issues related to the University’s development.

The participants expressed concern over the “degrading quality of education” in the University.

Fazel Ahmed Muslimyar, the chairman of the Senate (the Upper House) recommended establishment of a committee to identify problems and recommend solutions.

Other participants opined that the Nangarhar University used to be the second best university in the country after the Kabul University but it had moved down to the 11th position in the quality of education ranking in Afghanistan.

Saidajan Atiq Abdiani, a lecturer of Agricultural Faculty, said the University lacked a proper building and some of the students were living in rented rooms in the city since there was no facility of dormitory.

Dil Agh Waqar, the Deputy Chancellor of the University, said some remarkable progresses had been made in the University in the past years.

“We are able to offer master’s degree,” said Mr. Waqar. However, he demanded from the Ministry of Higher Education to make arrangements for a proper building for the University that could fulfill the requirements.

Ajmal Safay, a lecturer of Engineering Faculty, said that the University management shared these problems with the relevant authorities but no action had been initiated.
Established 50 years ago, the Nangarhar University currently has 10,000 students studying in 13 different faculties.
