Local officials call for more investment

BAGHLAN - At a meeting organized today by the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) in the northeastern province of Kunduz, local government authorities from neighbouring Baghlan province called for more investment.

However, they expressed views against promoting the private sector investment.

Munshi Abdul Majid, the provincial Governor of Baghlan, said his province would like to see projects that are agreeable to the local stakeholders, sustainable and that can generate employment opportunities.

In the meeting, also attended by representatives from the UN agencies and other international organizations, Baghlan officials presented the development gaps, needs and challenges.

“Baghlan is an agricultural and industrial province, but so far less investment has been made in these fields to fulfill the need of the people,” said Nasir Ahmad Kuhzad, the head of Baghlan National Disaster Management Authority.

Leila Bouchebouba, the Head of UNAMA Kunduz Regional Office, said, "It is important to understand the long-term efforts that are made here in Afghanistan to have better service delivery for the people of Afghanistan,"

The Baghlan Governor expressed his gratitude to various international organizations, including the Mine Action Coordination Center of Afghanistan (MACCA) for providing job opportunities to the locals and to the UN Children’s Fund (UNICEF) for its cooperation in the health and education sectors.
