Kunduz has a new radio station

28 February 2010 - A new radio station named Charagh (meaning: the lamp) has been established in Kunduz.

It is the fifth free and private radio station to be established in Kunduz, which covers 70 km of Kunduz and its nearby districts.

The radio station has been established by civil society with the financial support of the German Provincial Reconstruction Team (PRT).

“Today I am pleased to announce the establishment of a new non-governmental, independent private radio station based on Afghanistan press law,” said Malalai Yusufi, the founder of the station that airs on 87.4 FM.

According to Ms Yusufi, the station was established to raise public awareness on various issues and to bring social, political and economic changes.

“I hope one day Radio Charagh broadcasts not only in Kunduz, but also to neighboring provinces. As you know, the role of radio is very vital and important among the mass media,” said Kunduz governor’s office executive director.

Major Stephen Boster, the representative of the PRT civilian section in Kunduz, believes that the free mass media plays a positive role in strengthening democracy in a society.

“We hope that the new radio (station) could find its position among the other mass media and that it does its best for social development and promotion,” he added.

In Kunduz, there are high expectations about what Radio Charagh can accomplish.

“I hope that this radio station can convey the messages of peace and solidarity,” said Najibulllah Sedeeqi, the Acting Director of Kunduz Culture and Information Department.

Karima Sadeqi, the deputy head of Kunduz Provincial Council, hopes the station will be able to give a forum for women’s voices.
