KUNAR: 92,000 people receive voter cards

KUNAR - Tens of thousands of voter registration cards for upcoming election have been distributed in eastern Kunar province.

In the lead up to next year’s Presidential and Provincial Council elections, voter registration cards have been distributed to some 92,000 people, including 33,000 women, in eastern Kunar province, an official said on Saturday.

An outreach officer at the Independent Election Commission (IEC) office in Kunar, Sadatullah Mirza, told Pajhwok Afghan News Agency that mobile teams had been tasked with issuing voter cards to the residents of remote parts in addition to registration centres in district centres.

Mr. Mirza said the ongoing registration campaign had been successful and hitch-free so far in the provincial capital, Asadabad, and districts. He added that a total of 33,300 women had obtained voter cards, constituting 39 per cent of those having received the cards.

Half of 36 teams were tasked with distributing voters cards to women, he said, adding that it was a door-to-door campaign.

A resident of Asadabad, Shafiqa, confirmed obtaining the card. She said her family had no objection to her receipt of the voter card and her relatives had also received them.

A Marawara district resident, Gul Nazir, said the mobile team in their area distributes voter cards to people on a daily basis without confronting any problem. However, he complained that residents of remote and mountainous parts remained deprived of the cards.
