Hospital may collapse at any time

PAKTYA - A hospital in Ghazni has yet to be evacuated even though authorities say it is on the verge of collapsing.

The Director of Ghazni Civil Hospital, Baz Mohammad Himmat, said that in 2011 a government appointed team had found that the building could cave-in any time. The issue had repeatedly been shared with the central government, but the problem was yet to be addressed. The hospital was build 63 years ago with clay bricks.

“We’ve written so many times to the Ministry of Public Health about the hospital’s shaky building, but remedial measures have not been taken as yet,” Himmat said.

The foundation stone of a new 200- bed hospital was laid in Ghazni City four years ago, but work on the project was halted half way through for unknown reasons, the director said.

The provincial director of public health, Dr Zia Gul Asfandi confirmed that the ministry was aware of the pitiable situation the hospital has been in. He said cracks appeared in the structure three years back.He said provincial authorities were urgently looking for a house or another structure to rent to replace the hospital.
