Herat to plant million saplings, trees during “Green Month”

4 February 2011 - The annual state tree planting programme is kicking off in the western province of Herat to expand green areas ahead of the Afghan New Year on March 21.

“One million saplings and trees will be planted with the locals’ support,” Faghir Ahmad Bayangar, the provincial director of the Department of Agriculture.

Unlike in previous years, Afghan officials are focused on efficient planting to make sure the plants do not dry out. The programme is run annually in February under the name “Green Month,” but each year most of the planted saplings and trees die off due to improper irrigation methods and lack of monitoring.

“Places that have permanent access to water coming from Harirud River will be chosen for the programme,” said Abdel Qayum, the head of the Department of Environment in Herat.

In addition, Governor Daud Saba mandated a “green zone” commission - comprised of provincial representatives from the Departments of Agriculture, Environment, Rural Rehabilitation and Urban Development - to oversee tree planting program in various sites across the province and make sure the trees are properly looked after.

The launch of the state run campaign comes at the start of the United Nations International Year of Forests, dedicated to raising awareness and strengthening the sustainable forest management, conservation and sustainable development of all types of forests for the benefit of current and future generations.
