Herat officials meet on UN-backed development plan

HERAT - The Government of Afghanistan’s western Herat province presented last week a three-year plan, consisting of more than 1,000 development projects, to international donors.

The US$504 million plan, developed with the technical assistance of the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) and presented at a meeting co-chaired by UNAMA and the provincial Government on 11 February, details development activities related to security, governance and the economy.

The head of UNAMA’s Regional Office in Herat, Khalil Osman, who co-chaired the event with Acting Provincial Governor Aseeluddin Jami, reiterated the world body’s commitment to support the Government and civil society groups in the western region.

At the meeting, representatives from Italy, Iran, Turkmenistan, Pakistan and the United States Agency for International Development pledged their support to the plan for 2015 and beyond.

In addition to providing a forum to discuss donor commitments, the event was designed to strengthen partnerships between the local government and the international community, and to highlight the need for continued assistance to maintain services across the province.

Mr. Osman said UN agencies, funds and programmes implemented 246 development projects in the western region in 2014.
