HELMAND: Food aid distributed to 1,600 families

HELMAND - A range of United Nations-provided food aid and relief items is being distributed in the southern Afghan province of Helmand.

The items – supplied by the UN World Food Programme (WFP) and the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) – are being distributed to 1,600 families throughout the province.

The families were identified as being in need through a survey conducted by in part by the office of Helmand’s provincial governor, and each will receive 150 kilograms wheat, 11 kilograms cooking oil, 18 kilograms of cinnamon, six blankets, five tarpaulins, seven water pitchers and an amount of salt.

At the launch of the distribution effort on Monday, Helmand’s Deputy Governor, Masood Ahmad Bakhtawar, said that 1,290 of the 1,600 families have been displaced from the province’s Marjah and Kajaki district, and the Trikh Nawar, another 220 families were severely affected by storms, some 70 families came from the capital, Kabul, and another 45 families come from Iran.
