'On the Ground' photos exhibit set to open in New York

2 July 2011 - The United Nations will launch on 6 July a joint photo exhibit in the Visitors' Entrance of the United Nations Headquarters in New York entitled 'On the Ground: UN Peace Operations in Darfur and in Afghanistan'.

The photo exhibit, which will be open to the public throughout the month of July, is a collaborative effort between the two missions to represent the lives of people in two places plagued by years of devastating conflict. When combined into a single exhibit, the work conveys a message of human triumph and resilience in the face of adversity and chaos. The photos of Afghanistan are by UNAMA photographers Eric Kanalstein and Fardin Waezi.

The photographs on Afghanistan focus on the everyday challenges Afghans face in re-building their lives, their homes, their streets and their villages. Each image is a reflection of the daily struggle for survival encountered by Afghan women, children and men. The photographs are subtle. All are from ordinary daily subjects, each possessing something exceptional.
