Future top official in Afghanistan pledges continued support to peace process

TOKYO - In an interview with Japanese broadcaster NHK, Tadamichi Yamamoto, the UN Secretary-General’s Deputy Special Representative for Afghanistan, underscored the world body’s continued commitment to supporting the Afghanistan peace process.

It was clear that peace could not be won by military means, said the envoy.

Mr. Yamamoto said that the UN would continue to serve as a neutral mediator between the Afghan Government and the Taliban in order to move the process forward.

Mr. Yamamoto was recently designated as the future SRSG for Afghanistan, and is scheduled to assume office when the current SRSG, Nicholas Haysom, completes his term in office at the end of June.
