First Police Women’s Committee organized in Bamyan

BAMYAN - The Afghan National Police (ANP) in Bamyan today established, with support from the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA), the first-ever women’s committee among the female officers.

Comprised of the 20-strong women police force, the Police Women’s Committee started its first meeting by electing a chairwoman, deputy chairwoman and secretary.

The Deputy Chief of Police and police women agreed that the Committee would “be truly functional, not a symbolic entity” and would serve as a model to be replicated in ANP offices across the country.

The Deputy Chief of Police also emphasized the importance of continued international community involvement in strengthening the Committee’s capacity.

The day before, UNAMA facilitated a dialogue in Bamyan centre on security and police mandate to strengthen mutual understanding and confidence building between the people of Bamyan and Bamyan ANP representatives. More than 100 participants from the security sector, civil society, political organizations, religious and tribal leaders and elders, women and youth attended the workshop.

UNAMA had also facilitated similar well-attended workshops in the various districts of Bamyan province promoting accountable governance, as well as security enhancement.
