FARYAB: Maimana – Mazar highway now safe for travelers

FARYAB - Faryab security officials reported that they have tightened security measures on the Faryab – Balkh highway where drivers and passengers had previously been subjects of frequent lootings and attacks by insurgents.

Previously, the Taliban insurgents had made their check-posts in the forested areas of Dawlat-Abad district located in the Maimana – Mazar-i-Sharif highway and the travelers were looted or killed by the militants.

“This highway was frequently blocked by the Taliban previously and they often harassed the travelers. But now, we are glad to see the security forces are providing strong security for these areas. Before, it was difficult or sometimes impossible to travel through this route, especially at night,” a passenger told an Ariana TV reporter.

The Commander of the 209th Shaheen Corps in the north, Gen. Zulmai Wissa, said, “The thieves are everywhere, mostly in the forested areas of the highway but our forces are taking tight measures to provide safety to our citizens.”

“We are responsible to bring security in the areas that are assigned to us and we have increased our security procedures on this highway. We are trying to launch security operations to arrest the people creating problems for travelers,” said Gen. Nabi Jan Mullah-Khail, Police Chief of Faryab.
