Biggest steel mill in Afghanistan’s west inaugurated

HERAT - The biggest still mill in the western Region was inaugurated in the Herat Industrial Park earlier this week. The factory has the capacity to produce 80 tonnes of iron daily.

Abdel Hadi Arqandiwal, Minister of Economy, and Anwarol Haq Ahadi, Minister of Finance, who paid a visit to Herat, inaugurated the mill, along with Herat Governor Dawood Shah Sabah.

An Afghan businessman invested US$ 8 million in the mill, which has the potential to produce up to 400 tonnes of iron daily.

Esmatulah Wardak, the owner of Kabul Foolad steel mill, said 200 people have been employed by the factory and central and local Government officials have committed necessary support for the factory.

The Herat Governor said the opening of the factory is a clear indication of the Afghans’ strong determination for development and said the opening of the factory is a move against those who don't want to see a prosperous Afghanistan.

The governor called the industrial development and important part of the 15-year development vision for Herat and added the construction of this factory is a part of Herat development vision.

Minister Ahadi promised full Government support if national businesspersons invest more on domestic industries, adding that, in that case, the Government cut down on the import of similar foreign made products to the country.
