BALKH: Sweden-supported resource centre for disabled students opens in Mazar

BALKH - The Rehabilitation of Afghans with Disability (RAD) project of the Swedish Committee for Afghanistan (SCA) opened a resource centre in the office compound of the Department of Education in Mazar-i-Sharif, on Thursday.

The centre aims to provide training and educational materials for schoolteachers teaching the disabled people in the northern city of Afghanistan.

Before opening of this centre, 35 schoolteachers were given special training on how to teach disabled students such as visually impaired since the beginning of this year, but with opening of this centre 270 schoolteachers will get the same training within a year, said Qais Mehraeen, the head of the Department of Education during the opening ceremony.

According to SCA’s figures, 570 disabled students have been admitted in 120 schools in Balkh province in the last three years, many of whom have been recognized as “bright students” securing high grades.

The SCA further said that over 750 disabled students are currently enrolled in schools and training centres across Balkh province.
