BALKH: Amu erosion devastates Afghan villages

KABUL - Amu River erosion displaces hundreds of families and demolishes thousands of acres of farmlands every year in the northern region, said the Wolesi Jirga speaker Abdul Raouf Ibrhimi on Saturday, demanding government’s immediate attention and action.

So far over two thousand families have been displaced by this disaster and are said to be living in ‘critical’ conditions under tents or even in the open and demand urgent attention.

Minister of Water and Power, Ismail Khan said several projects have been planned to strengthen the Afghan side of the Amu River edges which will prevent further destruction, but he was concerned that government is not capable to budget those projects.

The Afghan part of Amu River borders with Central Asia along which hundreds of villages where thousands of acres of farmlands are located. The Afghan side of the river edges is vulnerable to water waves that often destroy farmlands and villages, clinics, schools, and houses, while the other side of the river is shielded by reinforced concrete protection.
