BAGHLAN: Lack of public awareness on voter registration

BAGHLAN - Some Baghlan residents have complained that they could not get new voter cards because they did not know the sites of ongoing voter registration exercise.

The local residents did not know about the sites because they were set up far away from the city centre, Pul-e-Khumri, the provincial capital.

The head of Baghlan Independent Election Commission (IEC), Abdul Malik Hanifi, said the IEC had planned to open the voter registration sites in the city centre, but unfavourable security situation was the hindrance.

Mr. Hanifi said the turnout of potential voters at the sites was low, while requesting the religious scholars and family heads to encourage “qualified individuals” to get the voter cards.
