Statement by the UN Special Representative for Afghanistan, Ján Kubiš, on the occasion of Ramadan

KABUL - With the holy month of Ramadan starting shortly, I would like to take the opportunity to congratulate the people and Government of Afghanistan and wish them peace and happiness throughout the coming days.

The need for peace and stability is even more urgent now as Afghans take their future in their own hands in a democratic process that forms part of the historic transition vital to the country’s future.

I sincerely hope that the occasion of this Ramadan, observed in a spirit of peace and compassion, can help pave the way for this long-cherished goal.

Once again, I call upon all parties to the conflict to respect the sanctity of this month and allow Afghan families to worship and celebrate in peace.

I also take this opportunity to re-affirm that, along with the United Nations family in the country, the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) remains impartial and steadfast in its commitment to the Afghan people in their quest for unity, security, stability and prosperity.
