Statement by the Secretary-General's Special Representative for Afghanistan, Tadamichi Yamamoto, on the occasion of Eid-ul-Fitr

KABUL - On behalf of the United Nations in Afghanistan, I wish all Afghans Eid Mubarak.

As Muslims around the world celebrate Eid-ul-Fitr after a month of fasting and worship, I hope that families around Afghanistan will be able to come together in peace, in an environment free of fear and violence.

To allow all Afghans to commemorate this auspicious and important celebration, I strongly urge all parties to the conflict to respect this time of reflection and tolerance. And I sincerely hope the sense of solidarity marked by this occasion will continue well into the future, allowing for the peace that all Afghans want and deserve.

The United Nations continues to stand with the people of Afghanistan in their quest for security, stability and prosperity.
