UNAMA chief discusses regional cooperation at Heart of Asia meeting

ISLAMABAD - Regional cooperation and security issues were discussed today at the 'Heart of Asia - Istanbul Process' meeting in Islamabad, attended by Nicholas Haysom, the UN Secretary-General’s Special Representative for Afghanistan.

The meeting, co-chaired by the Foreign Secretary of Pakistan, Aizaz Ahmad Chaudhry, and the Deputy Foreign Minister of Afghanistan, Hekmat Khalil Karzai, was also attended by representatives from 12 participating countries and officials from many other supporting countries, as well as regional and international organizations.

The Heart of Asia-Istanbul Process was launched in 2011 to bring together regional countries to promote peace and prosperity in Afghanistan through concerted efforts of participating and supporting countries as well as international and regional organizations engaged in the process.

Mr. Haysom, who is also head of the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA), took the opportunity of his visit to Islamabad to make bilateral calls, including on National Security Advisor Sartaj Aziz, to discuss regional economic, development, security and refugee issues.
