UNAMA condemns attack killing 16 civilians, injuring 40

KABUL - The United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) condemns in the strongest terms today’s suicide attack in Khost Matun city, Khost province.

A suicide bomber detonated his explosive devices amongst a group of civilians participating in a peaceful demonstration, killing 16 civilians and injuring at least 40, including four children. The attack took place in the vicinity of the Khost Provincial Governor’s residence, where a large group of civilians had gathered to protest against corruption.

“Such an attack deliberately targeting a group of civilians is an atrocity,” said the Special Representative of the Secretary-General and head of UNAMA, Nicholas Haysom. “Those responsible for this callous crime must be held accountable.”

On behalf of the United Nations in Afghanistan, the Special Representative expresses his condolences to the families of the victims and wishes a speedy recovery for the injured.
