UN Special Representative for Afghanistan, Ján Kubiš, visits audit centre

KABUL - The Secretary-General’s Special Representative for Afghanistan, Ján Kubiš, today visited the headquarters and premises of the Independent Election Commission (IEC), where the audit of the results of the country’s 2014 Presidential election run-off is taking place.

While there, the Special Representative met with the IEC Chairman, Dr. Yusuf Nuristani.

“It was very encouraging to see the audit being carried out in such an enthusiastic and dedicated manner, in the presence of Presidential candidates’ representatives, Afghan and international observers and the media,” said Mr. Kubiš, who also heads the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA).

“This comprehensive audit is the way to enhance the credibility of the country’s electoral process and acceptance of the run-off results,” he added. “I commend the perseverance of all those involved in this important activity, notably during the holy month of Ramadan.”

The audit is being carried out under the authority the IEC, which is also conducting the audit with close and extensive international supervision led by the United Nations.
