UNAMA supports civil society call for ceasefire during Ramadan

KABUL - The United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) supports the call today from the Federation of Afghanistan's Civil Societies (FACS) for a ceasefire by both parties to the conflict during Ramadan and Eid-ul-Fitr.

“Ramadan is a time of peace and community and should be observed in a spirit of compassion and unity – a ceasefire would be more than appropriate for this holy occasion,” said the Secretary-General’s Special Representative for Afghanistan and head of UNAMA, Ján Kubiš. “I wholeheartedly support this call from civil society and sincerely hope the parties will take heed of it.”

The UN Mission notes that, in light of the sanctity of this month, Afghan families should be able to worship and celebrate in peace, without fear of violence.
