BAMYAN - United Nations and provincial officials inaugurated a new office compound of the UN Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) in the country's Central Highlands province of Bamyan today.

United Nations flag was raised during an official opening ceremony attended by the Governor of Bamyan province, the head of the Afghan security forces in Bamyan, heads of government line departments, UN agencies and other local partners of UNAMA.

“The inauguration of UNAMA's new compound in Bamyan is not only the manifestation of increasing attention which UNAMA gives to the region and its commitment to be present here,” said Elena Drozdik, the acting head of the UNAMA’s Bamyan office, at the ceremony.

“This inauguration is also the manifestation of the local Government's support to the mission of the United Nations in Afghanistan and the demonstration of trust it has for our organization,” added Ms. Drozdik.

The UNAMA office in Bamyan province covers Bamyan and Dai Kundi provinces in central Afghanistan.

Ms. Drozdik also explained to the participants that the newly expanded and modernized compound would increase the effectiveness and productivity of daily operations and activities of UNAMA and the extended UN family in Bamyan.

The Governor of Bamyan province, Dr Habiba Sarabi, congratulated UNAMA officials for opening the new office building.

“I congratulate UNAMA for the opening of new office building that shows the commitment of the United Nations and international community to help the people of Bamyan,” said Dr. Sarabi.

Dr. Sarabi also commended the support and commitment of UNAMA to help the Government and people of Afghanistan in promoting human rights, good governance and democracy.
